THE opening day of the trial was delayed because of a suit which Grady’s mother had brought for him to wear.
Grady appeared in the dock wearing a prison issue grey tracksuit.
Timothy Raggatt QC, defending, explained how Grady had a right to stand trial wearing a suit but HMP Hewell, in Redditch, refused to let him wear one which hadn’t been checked by their staff and equipment.
Judge Mr Justice Lindblom asked why the suit couldn’t be checked by custody staff at Birmingham Crown Court and was told it was a policy of the prison to check all clothing themselves.
The court custody manager said they needed sniffer dogs to check for drugs and metal detectors to check for weapons.
It took three hours for the suit to be taken to Redditch and checked.
