New era for competitive school sport

A revival of competitive sport in schools is currently being undertaken in our schools in Herefordshire and Worcestershire. In light of Gordon Brown's announcement at the recent Sports Colleges Conference, Mr Brown stated that competition is the spice of life and it finds it purest expression in sport'. He also announced a new National Schools Sports Week which is due to roll out on June 30th 2008.

More competitions for school sports teams are being rolled out through the network of Competition Managers, Partnership Development Managers and Heads of Departments. The National School Sports Week will see more pupils and schools encouraged to participate in competition and allow School Sport Partnerships to raise the profile of inter school sport, working with National Governing Bodies, Local Authorities and local clubs and coaches to provide high quality competitive experiences.Current programmes have seen a restructure of existing school leagues in the more traditional sports including netball, football, basketball and rugby. However, the introduction of festival weeks involving alternative activities such as futsal, golf extreme, trampolining, rowing and dodgeball, are attracting pupils who may not normally represent their school in sport. "We are working with School Sport Partnerships, Heads of PE and local clubs in the two counties to involve more young people in interschool sport." "We have seen a vast increase in the amount of competitive experiences and real interest in both the traditional and non-traditional sports. As a result we are engaging more of our young people within schools.
