SIR – From her letter (Worcester News, October 15) Maxine Burgess believes that if we all go vegan, bovine TB will be cured.

Yet another quick fix solution that is totally out of touch with reality.

Becoming vegan is certainly not the answer to such a problem but it does show how little grasp Ms Burgess has regarding this serious situation.

The limited badger cull may have been postponed for now and maybe it was wrong but the problem of TB in cattle and badgers remains.

The badgers she seeks to protect by eliminating all cattle in the UK will be left to die out as TB spreads throughout the country, the wild deer population will suffer a similar fate.

TB must be dealt with by all possible means if cattle and wildlife are to have a chance of survival.

Ms Burgess forgets stock farming contributes to the conservation of our iconic countryside. Hedges, drystone walls and hedge banks were planted, built and are maintained to keep livestock in and are a sanctuary for much wildlife.

Huge areas of Britain, particularly the uplands, depend greatly on stock farming to support infrastructure, communities and livelihood where there is limited opportunity for arable farming with steep slopes and high rainfall.

So let our farmers continue to produce some of the best cattle in the world to probably the highest welfare standards.

Let’s all work towards preventing the spread of bovine TB.

Finally, let’s look forward to the happy day when the intolerant sound of vegan jackboots marching is heard no more.
