SIR – I was upset to read that Harriett Baldwin MP has been instrumental in getting a ban lifted so that livestock can now be exported to Russia.
I have visited Mrs Baldwin’s surgery to voice my concerns about live animal exports, where she gave me the impression that she was also against this trade, but obviously this impression was false.
I also sent for information about a recent shipment of calves being transported for 59 hours to Spain.
On September 12 an animal welfare disaster at Ramsgate Port saw 47 lambs either drowned or euthanised when facilities for their inspection and handling proved inadequate.
It’s no good saying regulations are in place as these are never enforced.
Harriett Baldwin should be ashamed of herself for condemning our cattle to long journeys abroad.
