Sir- As a keen club swimmer in my youth I was extremely sorry to read in Tom Edward’s article and your editorial (Worcester News 1st April) that plans for an 8 lane swimming pool for a city of this size have been dashed due to economics.

As a ratepayer though, I do see the council’s predicament in having to ignore the local swimming club’s natural wishes for a pool up to county standards, but in these austere times I am obliged to side with the council’s view that a modified 6 lane pool with an even lower estimate of of £6.5 million is sensible.

It just shows that the Prime Minister’s complacent promises of “The Olympic Legacy” was all talk. Are his wild statements on the floods going the same way?

Having now reached an age well above competition, though sympathising with current club swimmers,I have to admit that a 6 lane pool is quite suitable for the majority of patrons, and thus the council would at least be correct in agreeing for just that, rather than there be no pool at all.

The fact remains however that the local club will still be obliged to compete at Wolverhampton or Gloucester in galas to county levels.

I would hope that some council financial assistance would be in order.
