FIRST

Last week the city was gridlocked with road works including those in Henwick Road, Severn Terrace and The Foregate. In Saturdays edition you reported that 100 drivers had been fined and received three penalty points for ignoring a no entry sign in Britannia Square. Many motorists must regret that they have been penalised for attempting to find this alternative route through the City

If the 50 metres of road which the offenders entered had been temporarily derestricted this would have eased the congestion considerably.

It was stated that what the motorists had done was dangerous and the residents had complained, but should not the greater good be considered? I would suggest one Police Officer controlling the traffic would have been much more productive than the two issuing tickets.

SECOND

A new pedestrian crossing has been installed close to the railway bridge in Croft Road

This crossing is in permanent and constant use by pedestrians and cyclists who appear with little warning from either side of the road. One side of the road is partially obscured by the bridge. This is an accident waiting to happen. There are three sets of traffic lights on the Hilton road and Henwick Road and two of these are in close proximity to each other. These crossings do not have the same volume traffic as the crossing in Croft Road but are controlled by traffic lights. To prevent an accident the crossing in Grandstand Road should also be provided with traffic lights.

THIRD

There is a time restriction on the road leading from Sansome Street into Lowesmoor. To my knowledge this has not been enforced for a considerable time.

If illegally used this route reduces traffic congestion when it is most needed during the rush hour. Will we in the future read another headline “ Police Fine 100 Rat-Run Drivers”? Why is the sign there if the order is not enforced? It should be removed for not only does it cause confusion it adds to congestion.
