Sir - I hope Sergeant Alexander Blackman is successful in his appeal

Blackman, a veteran of heavy fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 10 years for the murder of a Taliban fighter who lay injured, or more than likely dying. The day before Blackman had seen the body parts of friends hanging from trees. He had been in an exhausting battle for six months with an enemy that has the moral compass of the Waffen - SS. He was apparently, a good man, tainted by war. Of course the killing of wounded prisoners can never be condoned.

In 1968 Lieutenant William Calley slaughtered the 109 innocent men women and children in the village of My Lai, Vietnam. He was sentenced to three and a half years house arrest.

That was as lenient a sentence as Sergeant Blackman's was harsh.
