In response to your article "We need urgent action to improve adult literacy rates" 12th September 2014.

I am a tutor and the owner of Worcester Learning Zone, where we tutor learners of all ages in a variety of subjects. We work with adults who want to improve their literacy levels.

These are often extremely anxious as their experience of learning to read has often been frustrating and embarrassing. Without exception, all of our adult learners have told us they have either experienced, or fear, public humiliation due to their low literacy levels, and have therefore developed ways of hiding it.

We work with these adults on a one to one basis, and never judge or humiliate them as we recognise that just asking for help is a massive achievement. With patience and hard work, our learners are able to achieve their own personal targets, whether that is to read a speech at their own wedding, or read a picture book to their grandchild.

If anyone knows of an adult who needs help with literacy please tell them we can help and that they can reach their goals.
