Given what happened in Gaza over the summer it is a great pity that Sir Peter Luff felt unable to support the recognition of a Palestinian state in last week’s Commons vote.
It may be to some extent a gesture, as he suggests, but when people in Gaza and the West Bank heard about the vote they danced in the streets.
Sometimes when you are desperate, even a gesture gives hope.
The Government wants to see a ‘negotiated agreement’ before recognising Palestine, but without serious diplomatic, political and economic pressure on Israel that is not going to happen.
Recently the Jewish writer Shlomo Sand explained why he wishes to renounce his Jewishness, as he cannot accept what is being done to the Palestinians in the name of Judaism.
To bring the message home Britain should immediately end our military collaboration with Israel.
How can we be engaged in arms sales with a country which has just wiped out nearly 2000 civilians including 500 children - with another 13-year-old shot dead last Friday (Oct.17th)?
