Sir - What is the point of more public engagement exercises, traffic surveys or external consultants to endlessly prolong the misery of traffic congestion in Worcester? Action is long overdue and as the responsible authorities seem incapable of identifying the impediments to traffic movement in the city here are a few simple suggestions to get them started.

1. Computer traffic management system - This system, installed in 1984, claimed to progress traffic movement across the city by optimising the timing and co-ordination of successive traffic signals. The system was designed for large cities but when traffic becomes congested it is not only ineffective but counterproductive. The former vehicle activated system based on fixed timings should be reinstated on a trial basis and if successful adopted permanently.

2. Shaw Street/ Foregate Street/Sansome Street junction - " The restriction at the mouth of Sansome Street should be removed to allow two vehicles to cross from Shaw Street simultaneously.

3. Deansway pedestrian crossing - The signals controlling the pedestrian crossing outside House of Fraser and the traffic signals at the Deansway/All Saints Road/Bridge Street junction should be co-ordinated. On numerous occasions the traffic signals are green for vehicles travelling from Deansway into Bridge Street when the traffic is stopped at the pedestrian crossing.

4. Quay Street/Deansway junction - Vehicles turning out of Quay Street should be allowed to turn left only and not be controlled by traffic signals. A set of signals outside All Saints Church would become redundant and should be removed.

5. No stopping yellow boxes - Rigid enforcement is required.

6. Worcester East side one- way system (plan provided on request)
