SIR - I cannot allow the letter from Councillor Gareth Jones (Letters page, November 20) go unanswered, in which he states that Worcester City FC are 'trying to spoil the enjoyment of the many...'.

If he was to look further at the application he would in fact see that the intent is to supply additional football facilities for 'the many'.

City's recent exploits in the FA Cup demonstrate that there is a love of the club, and groundswell of support, of which this fine city of ours should be justly proud.

He should also get his facts straight. The Perdiswell area is neither listed as a park site nor a wildlife site on the City Council's own website. It is shown as a sports area. All the land to the North of BilfordRoad is currently sports-orientated, with the sole exception of Perdiswell School.

I seem to remember him claiming in a previous letter that he had a thousand signatures on a petition against this development. As the electorate of St Stephen's Ward numbers 4,118 that is not 25% of the electorate. Therefore on a democratic basis he has no mandate to oppose the proposal.

Do I also detect a whiff of class prejudice? Football is the game, traditionally, of the working class. Would the proposal have received the same opposition if this had been made a rugby (middle-class based) stadium?

Let us hope that common-sense prevails and our great club is able to return to its rightful home in the city.
