SIR - A recent poll shows Lib Dems support has collapsed to just 7% - little more than a quarter of the 2010 general election result.
To create that sort of decline requires talent. It can only be achieved by listening carefully to your supporters and then going deliberately out of your way to offend them. It isn't just that the Lib Dems are on the minority side of several important national debates such as the EU and migration it is they sanctimoniously make out that everyone on the majority side is beyond the pale.
For example, anyone who questions Clegg on Britain staying in the EU is met not with a reasoned argument but with a bizarre statistic that three million British jobs depend on the EU as if all trade between Britain and member states would cease if we left the EU.
If Lib Dems had faith in their case that Britain is better off in the EU they would welcome an in- out referendum. That the Lib Dem leader wants to block the vote says all you need to know about his confidence in winning the argument.
