Sir - Mr Andrew Dyke believes it is "totally unacceptable, an absolute disgrace" that Lt.Colonel Holcroft, the Lord Lieutenant, has said it would be unsuitable for him to answer the questions of Councillor Richard Udall.

This is not the true story. The reality is that Colonel Holcroft has said it would not be suitable for him to appear before the County Council's Overview, Scrutiny and Performance Board, which Councillor Udall chairs, but that the Chief Executive of the County Council would be able and willing to explain to the Board how the Lord Lieutenant's allowance is used.

What is in truth "totally unacceptable, an absolute disgrace" is the implication that the Lord Lieutenant seeks to avoid accounting for his small allowance.

Anyone not consumed by egalitarian envy, as Mr Dyke seems to be, can see that it is obviously unsuitable for the Queen's personal representative in Worcestershire to be answerable to a Board of the County Council. Indeed, the members of the Board themselves, apart from Councillor Udall, have agreed that it would not be suitable.

In his last sentence, Mr Dyke opens up another line of attack by writing "So Councillor Udall keep up the good work. Don't let the snobs get to you".

Whom does he mean? If he is suggesting that the Lord Lieutenant is a snob, he has no right to do so without producing some evidence.
