Sir - Yesterday I heard that Owen Farrell, a pivotal young player in England's Rugby team, is injured, and may not play in the Six Nations.

As I thought about this, I came to the sad conclusion that I cared little about how the team does, at least in comparison to how I used to feel.

The reason for this change in me? The fact that during the last international Rugby competition English people could watch any of the UK teams play, except England!

Of course, those able to afford expensive Sky packages can enjoy watching our boys playing Rugby and Cricket, but the millions unable to afford to, inevitably become entirely disconnected from such great sports, and that includes millions of young children, the potential stars of tomorrow.

We used to be able to watch the highlights of the day's play of England's cricketers, in the evening on Channel 5, but even that morsel has been snatched from the nation.

What's at the end of the road we travel, when we only see the cost of everything, but the value of nothing?
