Sir - I read with interest the article in today's Worcester News [Cyclist raises concern about zebra crossing] in which cyclist Aaron Jenkins issued a warning to pedestrians and cyclists alike about the dangers of the zebra crossing in Croft Road.

Mr Jenkins stated that he had to "pedal a bit faster" across the road to avoid a driver who wasn't slowing down for the crossing.

Perhaps if Mr Jenkins adhered to Rule 79 in the Highway Code, he wouldn't have had a near miss on his bicycle. Rule 79 states - "Do not ride across a pelican, puffin, or zebra crossing. Dismount and wheel your cycle across".

Unfortunately, Mr Jenkins isn't the only cyclist oblivious to Rule 79 as I frequently experience cyclists riding across this particular zebra crossing.

This controversial crossing needs looking at - particularly at rush hour. It recently took me eleven minutes to travel from the bottom of Tybridge Street to this zebra crossing. Traffic is often backed up at busy times of the day due to the stop-start nature of a zebra crossing, especially one as busy as this.

The answer surely must be to instal a pelican crossing. This would eliminate the problem experienced by Mr Jenkins and also create a smoother traffic flow.
