SIR – I refer to three items which have received coverage recently.
Firstly, the report of motorists describing as a “disaster” the acute congestion right across the city due to roadworks.
Secondly the report that traffic flow has increased on Droitwich Road since the park and ride was scrapped.
Finally, the report that the scrutiny committee, chaired by Councillor Joy Squires, has been debatng “congestion”.
I applaud this initiative and trust that this committee will oppose vigorously any planning application which will inherently add to congestion, such as the application to build a football stadium on land adjacent to the Perdiswell Sports Centre. Vehicles using the “tip” already create queues directly opposite the proposed stadium entrance. Approximately 120 parking spaces are already being consumed on Saturday by people using the sports centre and playing golf. Add to this swimmers’ vehicles, now that this has been given the all clear.
Now, envisage the impact that the arrival of some 200/300 vehicles carrying passengers to a football match will have, all looking for somewhere to park only to find the car park full.
I would like to see Worcester City FC “come home”, but not to Perdiswell, especially while Councillor Squires is trying to “reduce” congestion in Worcester.
Why didn’t Worcester City FC take up the kind offer of Mr Cecil Duckworth to build a football stadium on the field adjacent to the Warriors stadium?
The football club would then only have to ensure that the two fixture lists did not clash. Parking would be no problem and they would irritate no one.

Revolution over elections needed
SIR – Louis Stephen’s letter  Time For a Change in (the) Electoral System (May 22) is essentially a piece of waffle.
Most would agree our first past the post voting system is utterly corrupt, as voting figures show.
Indeed how on earth can it be democratic for the SNP to receive 4.7 per cent of the votes cast and gain 56 seats in the House of Commons, when Ukip with 12 per cent of the votes cast got just one seat, or for the Greens to get 1,157,613 votes and just one seat. That’s an absolute disgrace! But nothing will change.
Elections are not about the proper democratic representation of we the people. They are about power and who exercises it. The Trade Unions behind Labour won’t give up the chance of absolute governmental power, nor will the rich behind the Tories.
This country imposed proportional representation on Germany post-First World War, and we imposed it on the Scottish Parliament, and we have proportional elections for Europe. Sadly when it comes to the Westminster establishment it boils down to which one of two parties is going to be able to impose its single part state upon the nation. To change that we require a revolution but we the people are our own worst enemies. We won’t stand together in the way that the Scots do so Westminster’s elite will continue to rule us, via their utterly rotten first past the post election system. Isn’t that why MPs are held in such contempt by the electorate, and why we say of politicians ‘They are in it for themselves?’.
I’ve demanded proportional representation through the pages of the Worcester News for almost 30 years. Not once have I received a response. And you can bet your last dollar our MPs have no interest in PR. Nor will we fight our MPs to force proportional representation upon them – we’ve no longer the backbone.

Roundabout way to complete failure
SIR – Another massive failure from Worcester Highways.
Is it not completely obvious that what has been done would never
work. What an absolute waste of taxpayers money.
Just got back from lunch in the Ketch where we sat watching the traffic at a very slow pace from Powick Island to the Ketch Island and this is on a Sunday, what will it be like on Monday morning.
Heard the Highways man on BBC Hereford and Worcester blatantly blaming the consultants.
Why, please tell me why we are hiring consultants? Surely this is the Highways job.
Now the Whittington roundabout was and still is a failure, the Ketch roundabout and new duelling system is a failure.
I think its time to let some people go.
Please stop wasting our hard earned money on complete and obvious incompetence.
I am a mere peasant but I am gifted with common sense so let’s get the ring road finished and build a new bridge.

Even grandson thinks situation bonkers
SIR – I have a 12-year-old grandson who has more than a passing interest in anything to do with cars.
His view on the southbound slip road at the Whittington roundabout, not continuing with the dual carriageway eastbound across the Norton roundabout as part of phase 1, and not merging two lanes into one westbound approaching the Ketch roundabout, thereby causing an absurdly dangerous situation over the Carrington Bridge, is actually summarised in one word which is “bonkers”.
If a 12-year-old can come to this conclusion, but the council seemingly can’t, there is only one possible explanation – collective insanity in the Highways Department.
Might I suggest psychiatric assessments be made mandatory for anyone who has anything to do do with the management of this project before the next stage begins, and yet more lunatic ideas are foisted on us unfortunate motorists?

Ridiculous that they have to be losers
SIR – Warriors did well gaining promotion to the Premiership by winning the two leg play-off by one point (ironically at the last gasp in both games, as Worcester has in the past been the losers in such circumstances).
But when will the officials come to realise that it is ridiculous for Bristol, having already won the league and beaten Worcester twice, in doing so, has to be losers in a knockout tournament between other top teams?
Up The Warriors but they were lucky not to have been in Bristol’s boots.

Believing what I read
SIR – I believe all I read in my Worcester News (John Phillpott, June 6).
I am nosey. I like to know what is going on in Worcestershire.
