SIR – I have followed the recent Parliamentary, and local, debate concerning solutions to the congestion near the Carrington Bridge and the call from all sides to dual the bridge.
Unfortunately dualling will not alleviate the situation because the bridge is not the cause of the congestion – the junctions and the roundabouts are.
In addition and regardless of how well-intentioned the current modifications to the existing roundabouts at Whittington, the Ketch and Powick are.
They will not even solve the current problems, let alone future ones unless the junctions are upgraded with flyovers complete with lengthy slip roads allowing the safe merging of traffic from all directions.
Unfortunately, land constraints prevent a real and lasting solution in this area, which leads me to believe we need another bridge south of the existing one serviced by a realignment of the existing road network and a new M5 junction.
Interesting is that while the value of this, improved productivity, will be inestimable.
The financial cost will be negligible – courtesy of the Bank of England’s printing press. Its called Green Quantative Easing.
Printing money but using the proceeds for the benefit of all, not just the bankers, as was the case previously.

Travellers should act within the law as well
SIR – Yet again a beautiful public area is blighted by the arrival of an illegal encampment of travellers .
This triggered the usual debate, that again leads to the shouts of racism and narrow mindedness .
For those who feel that these people are being wronged, go look at the children’s play area.
We witnessed boys standing on the slide urinating down it, whilst others crouched and defecated openly on the floor in full view shouting obscenities at passers by.
For those who think people who complain at the mess and filth these people normally leave, are fascist are far from the truth. We want them to be treated exactly the same as us – within the law.

Chance to rectify the EU con trick
SIR – Labour party supporters who believe in democracy should look on in horror at what the European Union has done to Greece.
Socialists, trade union members and social democrats should by now have finally realised that the EU and its German enforcer have turned the Euro-zone into nothing but a cruel version of the IMF.
The EU has shown it has no tolerance for national democracy, and no mercy for the workers.
Don’t forget that soon we get our chance to rectify the ‘Common Market’ con trick played on previous generations that turned us from free-men into surfs of this dishonest and ruthless bureaucracy that now wants to rule the whole of Europe without a democratic mandate.

My boycott on Tesco for lack of respect
SIR – Today I unfortunately visited Warndon Tesco with my wife to buy a few last minute things. I should really have known better. I wanted to find the price of an item that seemed to have been abandoned alone on a shelf. Finding a middle aged assistant wearing the obligatory earpiece and microphone, she just looked at me and walked away.
Persevering I found another assistant, again wearing the obligatory headgear and I unfortunately had to interrupt her conversation with a colleague. After looking at me in disdain, I then asked this assistant if she could tell me the price of the item.
I was told, rather brusquely, to ask at the tills. At this point I gave up and not only did I not purchase this particular item, I left my trolley of goods unpaid, vowing never to step foot in a branch of Tesco ever again. No wonder Tesco is suffering loss of sales if this is the sort of service they provide!
I will shop where the customer is treated with courtesy and respect, something that is lacking in Warndon Tesco.

Socialism has no role in the Labour Party
SIR – Jeremy Corbyn MP is reported to be in the lead in the Labour Party leadership contest, having secured the most nominations so far from constituency Labour Parties.
He also has the support of the Unite union and is expected to secure the support of most trade unions.
Not surprisingly, the Blairites in the Labour Party, which include most MPs, Lords and some constituency parties like Worcester LP, are horrified, clinging to the mantra that elections are won on the centre ground, not from the Left.
The problem with parties all descending on the centre ground is that elections cease to be political events (because all parties believe in the same thing) and become beauty contests.
In any case, the ‘centre ground’ of British politics has moved so far to the right since the Thatcher-Reagan era that Labour’s founding socialism no longer has a role in the party which has signed up to a neo-liberal consensus of the right.
Nonetheless, many Labour Party members cling to the fantasy that it is still a socialist party, hence Corbyn’s emergence as a front runner.
Worcester Labour Party and its former Parliamentary candidate Joy Squires are supporting Liz Kendall MP for the Labour leadership (Worcester News, 13th July).
The mind-set here is the same as that which saw Jim Murphy MP chosen to lead Labour in Scotland from the ‘centre ground’.
If Liz Kendall secures the leadership of the Labour Party, I forecast that she will be as successful as Jim Murphy under whose leadership Scottish Labour was wiped out.

Not a single dog bowl to be found in the city
SIR – A general email to Worcester News for your consideration and response please.
I am a Worcester resident and proud of a lovely city – but why is there not one dog water bowl anywhere within the city?
I love to bring my dog with me when in central Worcester, but not one dog water bowl outside any shop. Come on Worcester Council, let’s see a simple fix?
