SIR – How patronising. The reason why there is no inquiry into the Ketch leak is because there was no leak.
The county council organised the press leaks to cover for their gross incompetence and to make us mere peasants believe that three scapegoats have been held accountable for the Ketch Island fiasco. Now the punishment for the scapegoats is an extended summer holiday on full pay funded by us, the taxpayer.
Now the county council has already been caught out once this week telling porky pies. Can I suggest that we get the three scapegoats back to work so as to stop wasting our money and for the people in charge of highways to stop insulting the intelligence of the people who pay your wages.
If you can’t do your jobs, stand down. Worcester people are sick of sitting in traffic jams and a lot of people avoid the town altogether. Please get someone in who can do the job.

Greenest government ever? I must disagree
SIR – Over the past few months the government has mounted a widespread attack on measures to promote a greener Britain and tackle climate change. These include cuts in support to onshore wind and solar power, restoring the use of banned bee-killing pesticides, abolishing energy efficiency schemes and much more. Most bizarre of all is the fossil fuel levy on renewable energy generators. As Friends of the Earth said: “It’s like putting an alcohol tax on apple juice.”
At the same time they are promoting fracking in national parks and are planning a new nuclear power station that will be the most expensive ever built and those building it will receive subsidies amounting to billions of pounds for decades to come.
These are clearly political, not economic, choices. The Tories have said yes to fracking, fossil fuels and nuclear – whatever the costs – but no to renewables because solar has been bringing down peak energy prices, cutting into the profits of the big energy companies. The government is protecting the fossil fuel power generators and the “Big Six” energy companies from competition.
Clearly not even close to being the “greenest government ever”!

Hospital buses aren’t suitable for everyone
SIR – While agreeing with Peter Nielsen in his letter that more people should use the bus to get to Worcestershire Royal, for those living in or near London Road the buses going east terminate at County Hall. The County Council bus journey planner on their website offers options of a minimum of 12 minutes’ walk and a maximum of 18 minutes’ walk from my address. Not that useful on a rainy day for anyone, let alone someone with arthritis.

Cameron’s demands on EU are a real let down
SIR – After months of grandstanding speeches, what a let down David Cameron’s “demands” on Europe were. Where were the requirements that EU migrants must secure a job before coming to the UK? Where the immediate deportation of any EU migrant who hasn’t got a job in six months? Where the emergency brake on the free movement of EU workers?
These are what a majority of the public appear to want to be demanded, yet David Cameron’s demands look like having as much clout as a feather duster.
Instead of “demanding”, he begged.
Totally hopeless, yet we all know Cameron has no intention of us leaving the EU, he simply talks the talk to get votes.

Shouldn’t my bag be free if I buy quite a lot?
SIR – I went on a day trip to Cribbs Causeway today. I was enjoying it and saw a couple of things I would buy towards my Christmas list.
I know you now have to pay 5p for a plastic bag, but surely when one buys several items a bag should be free. I felt like walking out with the goods over my arm or putting them back on the rack. I’m sure like myself all ladies carry bags, but only small ones.
I did pay 5p but will not need to use the large bag again. I wonder if they will give me my money back?

Cyclists are making the streets feel unsafe
SIR – I feel my personal safety is compromised by the increasing number of cyclists in the city who insist on using the pavement as a thoroughfare.
I visit many other towns and cities and this rarely, if ever occurs. Do the council or police intend to do anything about this stupid, illegal practice before someone is injured?

Maybe without religion we could live in peace
SIR – What I am about to write will upset many people but after what happened in Paris last week they will have to search their own beliefs.
All through time the main reason for death, war and suffering on this planet has been religion, or at least one person saying “it’s my right to say everyone else does not have any rights at all”.
When all the people of the world realise there is no God, no salvation and religion is just a  made-up fantasy, maybe we will all be able to live in peace.
