SIR – I must reply to John Mathews letter in today’s Worcester (Tuesday, January 12) in which he accuses Mr Walker of all the faults that affected Worcester as a whole since he became our MP.
Yes, I agree that in 2014 he, Mr Mathews, was only able to get across the River Severn from St John’s via the Carrington Bridge, but also at that time Harriett Baldwin did not take Mr Cameron to see the floods at Severn Stoke and the army personnel who were at the city bridge to assist the public in and out of St John’s.
For Mr Mathews’ information, before and since his election Mr Walker has done a great deal for Worcester in that he has been responsible for supporting the new cancer unit at the Worcester Royal Hospital, improving the meal service, supporting the new rail station at Norton, and most important of all, it was he who managed to get the Minster of Transport to visit Carrington Bridge with its problem of not being a dual carriageway prior to the last General Election.
Also, since then all the six Worcestershire MPs have collectively been to the Ministry of Transport in support of the Carrington Bridge dual carriageway for the money that is needed to pay for it.
In the WWII period Worcester City Council had plans drawn up to build another bridge from Tybridge Street to Newport Street, but since then it has been shelved by each succeeding city council, the excuse being that there was no money available.
Also, the ring road should be built to eliminate the gridlock that Worcester city suffers from. So Mr Mathews, do more research and get your facts right before accusing people in public life of any wrongdoing.

A Brummy writes...
SIR, About 30 years ago I had occasion to go to Chatham.
I was demobbed from the army from Chatham and came back to my home town of Worcester to live.
I had a pal who was also demobbed at Chatham but married and stayed there.
We had been pals for four years in the army, so I thought I would ring him up so we could meet and chat about old times.
I went into a phone box and then suddenly realised I didn’t know his Christian name.
I had always called him Paddy because he came from Ireland.
There were 30-odd people with his surname in the phone book so I had to give up.
We always had nicknames in the army. I have listed some of them but I am sure that there must be other Worcester men with nicknames from the services during the war.
There was Paddy, Jock, Taffy, Scouse, Geordie, Yorky, Lofty, Tich, Chalky, Dolly, Chipper to name but a few.
I dare say that other Worcester men who served in one of the services in the war could come out with a lot more. I hope that we shall see.
I sign myself with my nickname, Brummy.

Good news, hurrah!
SIR – On December 29 the Worcester News had a front page story about a dog named Lily who had fallen 10 metres into a well.
The story was so good, showing the rescue of this dog.
The Worcester News did a very good job of showing the dog being pulled up by the rescue services and the man who risked his own life to go down that well to rescue someone’s pet. That deserves more praise than anyone can give him, as do all the rescue services involved that day.
For Lily to get out with just a few scratches is a marvellous outcome. It made my new year seeing the pictures and the hard work our firefighters do.
I’m glad she made it out of that hole, and praise for our Worcester News for a good story.
We hear of so many bad things going on — this is a happy one for a change.
Well done, everybody.

Parking sorely needed
SIR – If we really must lose more green space in the pursuit of tarmac then at the very least I agree with Cllr Gareth Jones.
It is far better to enlarge the Worcestershire Royal Hospital and provide much needed additional parking.
There is absolutely no need for the ironically named Worcester Woods retail park, which will only lead to the closure of shops and restaurants in the city centre.

No more room here
SIR – Berlin’s swamped immigrant centre has admitted it can no longer cope. Because of the warm welcome extended by the German Chancellor, there have been enough people admitted in 2015 to fill Wembley Stadium... and still they come!
Let us hope that our own Prime Minister has enough sense to regulate the number admitted to our own country.
However much sympathy one has for these poor people, charity begins at home.
Worcester itself is already more than full when one considers how many houses are being built or planned by government decree.
Where are all the occupants of those properties going to find enough schools and doctors’ surgeries, which are already overloaded?

Keep our Anthem
SIR – We should keep our National Anthem, for its reference to Almighty God. Also Christ’s belief in heaven and hell (ho ho ho!).
“Love your neighbours.” said Christ, and “love your enemies” (not easy).
