SIR – It seems inconceivable to me that Daniel Mills has escaped being locked up.  Having read the account of his horrific attack on Philippa James, surely this was enough to warrant a jail term?   Then, I was disgusted to learn that he has also had sex with an underage girl, whether it was “consensual”, as described by his defence, or not.  Surely the age of consent was set at 16 years of age simply because younger people are not old enough to make up their mind over it?  You may as well give carte blanche to anyone to do so, in that case? It may well need lowering, but has not been yet.  When did the law not actually start to be not the law?

My feeling is that this sentence is wrong enough, that is, not severe enough to warrant revisiting by the powers that be, using those powers that are vested in the people who review them, to increase it’s severity.
