SIR – Hard to find any sympathy for the porters, although those I have had dealings with have been absolutely great [hospital porters have threatened to strike after their TV was taken away, Worcester News, August 19].

My sympathy is directed to the nurses and midwives who work anything up to 12 hours and very often longer and who regard a break even for a cup of tea a rare event and privilege. Many times it is impossible for them even to get a meal break and despite those in management knowing this, nothing is done and they just go on tolerating a shocking situation.

So, sorry porters, you just go on strike, the nursing staff will be made to stand-in for you, you will lose pay and rightly so and, once again it will be the patients and nursing staff who shoulder the load.

What other jobs except the fire service expect to watch TV during their working hours? If you do strike, you should be sacked immediately and let someone do the job who values it.
