sir – I read with interest that the County Council has a pot of £5 million to reduce congestion in places like Worcester city centre. Re-configuring traffic light sequences may help to keep the traffic moving but surely we also need to reduce the amount of car journeys too?
We now seem to be living in a world where parents are understandably concerned about letting their children walk to school because of high levels of traffic and problems crossing busy road junctions. The amount of vehicles at the beginning and end of school times is regularly bringing traffic flows across the city to halt. Many residents living next to schools are experiencing near road rage levels of chaos outside their homes.
Could the County Council please explain why it can not use some of the £5 million congestion budget on creating safer walking routes to school, promoting school buses and encouraging more children to walk to school by means of ‘walking buses’ as used in other parts of the country?
