sir – It is strange that your front page story on “Disgust at mess left by McDonald’s customers” was considered more important than those on homelesssness and domestic violence which languished inside.

It is a convention (and no doubt convenient to McDonald's) that customers clear up after themselves. But it is not an obligation, any more than it is at any other restaurant or cafe.

To call those who decide to leave it to the staff “litter louts” is inaccurate and to call them “animals” is a ludicrous overreaction.
