SIR, Worcester’s Gheluvelt Park is home to an active ‘Sons of Rest’ club. The Sons of Rest movement started in Birmingham in 1927, when a group of Industrial veterans got together in Birmingham’s Handsworth Park. The first purpose-built building was created in 1930, and from then on the movement expanded to other parks.
Gheluvelt Park is a war memorial park, named after the battle of Gheluvelt, an early engagement in the First World War.
A unique war memorial in the south-eastern corner was commissioned from Plincke Landscapes at a cost of £33,000, which represents the fallen from various engagements and battles in the First World War.
Gheluvelt Park is a very beautiful park and it would be wonderful to see more people enjoying its splendour and its facilities including the ‘The ‘Sons of Rest.’
The ‘Sons of Rest’ club is open to older, retired members, who meet to play dominoes, cards and chat over tea and biscuits, creating a special social atmosphere. New members are always welcome.
