An ex-serviceman can’t wear uniform

SIR - Certain consternation has been caused by your report of an ex-serviceman who continues to wear uniform in inappropriate circumstances.

The answer is that it is an offence to wear HM uniform without lawful authority, regardless of any service connection.

Normally, on discharge, ex-service people are given a date after which uniform may not be worn and re-enactors are not normally exempt.

The Army will have its own regulations but Royal Navy dress regulations specify certain individuals who, by virtue of long service and seniority, retain discretion to wear uniform on appropriate ceremonial occasions.

They are normally referred to as "retired" rather than "ex".
