City is being ruined by filth and decay

SIR – On Thursday, August 7 , I went on a day trip with my two grandsons to Worcester.

A tour of the museum with a splendid display by the Worcestershire Regiment went down very well. However it was devastating to walk along the Foregate and witness a filth and decay. The scruffy frontage of the old post office and filthy pavements are just a taste of what awaits you further on. As we approached the filthy entrance and pavement of McDonald’s, I wondered why is this being neglectfully allowed?

Surely the powers that be have the authority to make McDonald’s and other fast food outlets clean up their act not only inside but outside their premises?

More voices are needed.

Stand up and be counted for your city.

MRS J KNIGHT,

Great Malvern

I wonder how long it will be before the Chinese and Indians will be sending us aid and their media will be commentin condescendingly around Third World dumps like Worcester.
One thing is for sure....politics and (our alleged democracy) isn`t "delivering" around here!

Us English - except the older generation - have absolutely no civic pride at all!

Everybody drops litter whenever and wherever they have finished with it - it's a national disease and has been for years.

What sickens me, is everywhere on the continent is so clean! The street cleaners walk around and have very little to do - but they still do it very well and it is all spotless!

Like it should be!

We are a backward and filthy people, ask any visitor stupid enough to come here - get used to it!

Common Sense said "Us English - except the older generation - have absolutely no civic pride at all!"

Have to disagree there - I know plenty of miserable OLD sods who don't give a toss about civic pride! And I know young people who do. Please don't condemn an entire generation because of their youth. There are exceptions of ALL ages.

Neither Forthright or Common Sense appear to have any respect for anyone or anything - all they do is criticise in extremely vicious and negative terms. If you really believe that Worcester is a "dump", or that we are a "backward and filthy people" then please up sticks and go elsewhere - we don't need you here. For heaven's sake, can't you try and see the positive sometimes instead of the negative? You'd be so much happier!

Fair comment, CJH - I take your point. I should have said "mainly the elderly..", as we were brought up under a different set of rules - the "pre-1960" rules and they appear to be vastly different from those applied today.

What Forthright thinks - you must ask him!

I would LOVE to be positive and happy and smiling and love everybody and everything - trouble is, I have a problem these days with the sheer volume of stupidity and carelessness and lack of respect for anything and everything - and just HAVE to speak out!

(People who know me, say I am a cheery soul, so the vitriol is mainly reserved for these fair columns! However, I am greatly heartened when so many write in and say they agree with me! It's appreciated!)

I think you will find most of us who scribble away in these columns feel the same way.

Maybe "distance lends enchantment" and the so-called old days just SEEMED to be better - and I suspect this attitude is common to most older folk - and always has been.

Isn't it a lovely day today? The sun is nearly shining, as well! Let's all migrate to the seaside and sit side by side, shoulder to shoulder on the beach and pay through the nose for an ice-cream, shall we? When the rain stops, we'll all come back up the jammed up motorway!

DO have a nice day!
