We pay huge sums to get nothing back

SIR – Terry James (August 13) is correct in one way that other countries in Europe have benefitted from membership of the EU but he totally ignores the reason, which is that we have financed their growth by paying in huge sums of money into the EU coffers and have got the least amount back despite the fact we pay in after Germany, the largest amount per head.

We are financing France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Holland, Sweden and the rest of the EU whilst our transport system, NHS and schools all suffer from lack of investment.

Think what we could do if we adopted the UKIP’s policy of getting out of the EU and using the billions of pounds we pay to that organisation for our benefit and not theirs.

MARK STARR,

Leigh Sinton,

Leave the EU?

Sadly, it won't happen, Mark - all three main parties are singing from exactly the same EU Hymn Sheet! Namely "Come and Join Us"!

UKIP seemed to have stalled on the first corner - and literally vanished from our screens and newspapers.

Shame really, if they could raise their profile, who knows what might happen.

I see they only collect votes in miniscule double-figures, in by-elections - why is this?

Is nobody door-knocking with the message?

Would Nigel Farage be better employed back home in the UK, raising the profile dramatically, I wonder?

They have everything to lose - including the whole of England!
