Teachers should do the marking

SIR – During my schooldays the teacher who taught a subject was responsible for the marking of examination papers.

If this method was reinstated there would be little or no waiting for the results of the tests.

So why has this tried and trusted method been abandoned and test papers put out to various companies who appear to be either losing or mislaying the examination papers, thus taking an age for the recipients to receive the results?

PETER ALCOCK,

Worcester.

Teachers were never responsible for marking their own puplis in external examinations
The main problem now is that only teachers are allowed to mark exams . Is this an admission that they did such a lousy job that they didn't pass sufficient knowledge to the next generation or is it just hanging on to a perk ?
Any reasonably educated person , given the marking scheme , should be able to mark a factual subject which he or she understands and many have far more time available at the appropriate time of year than our supposedly overstretched teachers
