SIR – I was wondering if my old friend MP Mike Foster could answer these questions for me?

When he says that he would like to see the return of the food waste collection could he please tell me which year it stopped, because I cannot remember it ever starting. Also in plain layman’s terms, how much will it cost and who is going to pay for it?

COLIN LAYLAND,

Worcester.

Straight from the mouth of Hilary Armstrong, a dyed in the wool Labourite Minister through and through. She was accused of inapropriately and questionably taking a job with a waste disposal firm after her time as Local Government Minister and she was accused of bringing in fortnightly waste food collections on the advice of this firm. SHE REPLIED, (to the effect), "IT WAS NOT MY DEPARTMENT THAT BROUGHT THEM IN, IT WAS THE DEPARTMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT".
Now everything coming from Mr Foster is his wish to see weekly collections brought back, almost accusing the City Council of being responsible for it. Next time he comes out with it at a public meeting etc, just ask him which Government and which department was responsible for ordering fortnightly collections of household waste. Further, as Colin Layland asks, ask Foster who is going to pay for an additional weekly collection, his Government or us Council Taxpayers. Before wheelies, we had a collection every week or two a fortnight, if Foster gets his way, it will increase to three a fortnight. We have a right to ask him who is paying because his Government brought the existing scheme in and forced it on us.

The key word is 'return'. How can you return to something when you never had it in the first place?

I can't speak for Worcester , I've only been in the county for 43years , but Bristol had a "pig bin" collection into the 50's . waste food was collected in a small bin separate from the dust bin amd paper bag and converted to swill for the piggeries . my wife can remember a similar system in Birmingham
Ironic if Worcester , at the heart of food production , did not when these industrial cities did

I am at a loss to understand the problems associated with food waste. We always wrap food waste in newspaper and then put it in a plastic carrier bag (ex supermrket)
and sometimes use two carrier bags.
We have no problems with flies or rats or bad smells. We have been disposing of food waste like this for forty years or more. If one is stupid enough just to put waste food direct from a plate straight into the bin then you will have a problem.
