Ditch plastic bags

SIR – Just been watching BBC News with a piece on the dreaded plastic bag. Why on earth don’t they just ban the manufacture of said bag plus buy the cotton or recycled bags on offer in the big stores. If the shops didn’t have to buy the plastic bags they could afford to sell cotton ones much cheaper.

Whilst I recognise the problems that the millions of plastic bags that won't go away, has anyone given any credit to these plastic bags for the benefits to health against infections. And those who shout for Re-usable bags, should look at the scenario of the bag after being bought and used is taken home stored away in clinical conditions I hope, since it will then be taken back to the shops and the checkouts where someone else's bags who haven't stored them so carefully and is full of germs have just gone before you. What we have is a potential of an uncontrolled germ transference spot, from one persons bags to another's. So do really have the safe answer yet? I think not.
