SIR – I read with bemusement your article about how often councillors turn up for meetings (June 25) and wish to correct some erroneous conclusions within it. As a newly elected opposition backbencher in 2005, I was not a member of the cabinet, overview and scrutiny, planning, police or fire authority. So it would have been rather difficult to attend committees of which I was not a member! I was a member of four other committees, one of which ceased to operate and one of which only met twice in four years.
However, over the last four years, I attended every full council meeting and put down more questions than all bar three of my fellow councillors. In 2008-2009 along with the meetings mentioned, I attended three Redditch Forums chairing two; four highways forums; 16 PACT meetings; three other neighbourhood meetings, and chaired six meetings of the group to get the Brockhill Estate adopted. On top of this, I conducted more than 20 doorstep surgeries.
Another statistic from your survey which could be misunderstood concerns Alwyn Davies who you list as going to 11 meetings. What this does not say is that Alwyn was the chairman of the council and barely went a day without carrying out an engagement on the council’s behalf.
Serving the people of Redditch North was a great honour and privilege. Indeed a highlight of my life. There were many reasons why I lost on June 4, but inaction was not one of them.
