SIR – I’ve been observing the John Buckley saga in bemusement.

I know, as acutely as anyone, the truth of that old maxim that “there are no (or vanishingly few) friends in politics”, and it is clear that his obsessive “me, me, me” fixation has blinded him to the fact that Tory Robin Walker’s carefully-calibrated contact (which obviously gives Buckley’s ego a huge boost) is simply about the collusive damaging of the Labour Party – of which he was a member for 41 years. What strange behaviour!
