We don’t need all that surveillance

8:00am Thursday 9th July 2009

SIR – I’m not surprised the police spokesman didn’t want to give his name (Yobs force cathedral to close public garden, June 25).

“Twenty-four-hour surveillance would (appear to be) the solution and this is impossible for the police and cathedral authorities”, he said.

What has it to do with the cathedral authorities? It’s the job of the police to ensure security.

And who said anything about 24-hour surveillance? Even the police station doesn’t have that. Yobs sleep, too.

They don’t infest this once-lovely area to vandalise buildings, menace tourists, get stoned, and attack MPs 24-hours a day.

Police know when the high-times are – from about lunch-time to midnight.

That’s less than 12 hours. Sensible, planned surveillance during this period is all that’s required.
