Thanks for going along to the hunt

SIR – A very big thank you to all the people in and around Pershore on Boxing Day who came along to see the hunt meet in the square.

All up the main road the field were mounted as it was better under foot for the horses. Once again there were mince pies handed out, 500 in all. Everyone was in good spirit and cheered and clapped as the hunt moved off.

If the truth were known, these people did not attend to support the depraved people who dress up in stupid clothes to kill defenceless animals, they probably attended out of boredom and to scrounge a mince pie. Some of them probably took some home in boxes.
How juvenile can one get when one takes the time to write to this paper to thank those who clapped. Again if the truth were known they were clapping for the fox who got away.
These people should be regarded as the contemptible half-wits that they are.

Your desperation is showing BarryB. I cannot see people heading to Pershore on Boxing Day to scrounge a mince pie top take home and put it with those that they already have.
It is time to wake up and realise that there are lots of people out there who disagree with you.

And a far greater number agree with me New Kid, and how do you know people "headed" to Pershore, they may well have come from there. Few, I expect other than the half brained idiots who are hooked on the sight of blood and gore would have travelled far to see people play-acting as if they were back in medieval times.

As one who has lived here for some 26 years and for many years had photos of the Pershore Boxing Day Hunt kindly published in the WN, the Evesham Journal and the Evesham Observer, I can assure you the regularly large crowds are a mixture of both locals and visitors from out-lying villages. Locals always walk into town, but the car parks are full with visitors cars!

Weather permitting, the scene is most attractive and reminiscent of "Olde Englande" -something which many of us mourn the passing.

It is actually very rare for them to catch a fox - or even find one, but the pleasure is in the dressing up, the ride itself and of course the tradition.

Many traditions of our nation are being lost or removed at an alarming rate - some of us cling to the more harmless, yet colourful ones out of pure nostalgia for the past.

Hunting ranks alongside the Changing of the Guard and, more rarely, a Coronation. As you will see from WWII films, the Germans greatly envy our system of hunting and equestrian prowess and once tried hard to copy us. It's all on film.

We should always keep something of our past history - or would you have us destroy it all?

CS.

Thank you Common Sense.
BarryB may strongly object to Hunting that is his right.
I strongly object to a government forcing through a bill by the use of that dubious legislation the Parliament Act after receiving in excess of a million pounds from a foreign based animal rights group.

I could say much CS, like how can you equate hunting with the changing of the guard, I wasn't aware that the soldiers went chasing after fox's when they were on guard. As for the Coronation well I could say more on this as I was there.
As long as people only "dress up" and ride their magnificent horses, I have no problems with them at all, I have serious problems however when they indulge in sheer, wanton and criminal cruelty as I do with those who give them active support who are no better.
Our wildlife is diminishing by the day, these are the same characters who see nothing wrong in killing badgers and then dumping them at the roadside and killing birds of prey because they raid their handreared pheasants etc.
Their "pleasure" is in the killing and the sight of blood and entrails, then the same people go home and cuddle their kids as if they have a sense of humanity and decency in them.
These are the same people who would sit at the guilotine and laugh and cackle as another head goes for the chop. They are criminals.
