Friday night parking fines put people off

SIR – As I was walking through Worcester early on Friday evening to meet my wife at the railway station, I noticed that several businesses had ceased trading, including restaurants, and there were very few people about. As I walked past a nearly empty car park in St Nicholas Street there were two wardens placing a fixed penalty ticket on a car in the car park. I could not help thinking that the lack of people and the number of businesses closing could be linked to the madness of a local council thinking it was a good idea to fine people for coming to spend money in Worcester on a Friday evening.

I agree with you Tim, thats why I ask why, dont the Citizens of Worcester vote all the idiots out, they only have to do it once, then whoever gets in would know that they are there under our wishes, you cannot blame the person who puts the tickets on, because they have to, its their job, but it is a rip off, do you know that if you are a few minutes late even though you have paid their extortionate fee, you will have to pay the fine, about sixty pounds, I call it legal theft, but if I want to pay for a £2.50 ticket, and I only have on me £3.00, do I get change? do I hell, again legal theft.
The Council do not give a ****, even though this stops a lot of shoppers going to the city centre, they still exspect the shop owners to pay their extortunate business rates,
thats our Council for you, did you know? that council wages in the 1960s was very poor, now they are the same or even better than manufacturing wages, that says it all.

Worcester’s parking charges are little if any different to any other city. I presume your talking about the closure of IMMO, well it was never going to last that long with 3 other pizza restaurants within 5 minutes walk. If you think Worcester is suffering, which it isn’t when you look at the statistics, you should try visiting Wolverhampton Dudley Or Gloucester to see what a recession looks like. I agree it would increase the amount of people coming in to Worcester if prices are lower, but why would one council do it if no others are willing to do the same. Maybe Worcester could trail blaze on this issue?

How could free car parking for shoppers and diners be enforced to make sure that people don't take advantage and just leave their cars there all weekend, free of charge?

Why should there be free parking.?
Using the same principle, if restaurants offered free meals that would encourage people into town wouldn't it?
Should we provide free taxis and buses for those who don't own cars?
A night out in town for a couple will cost the best part of £50 and you think £2 or £3 makes all the difference.
Why should I as a council tax payer subsidise car owners?(yes I am one)

jovialcommonsense.

The point I was making, if you are refering to me, is that we are not talking about free car parking, and I was refering to some unfortunates, who has paid for parking ,but about five minutes late, and unlucky to find a warden there and putting a fixed parking ticket on their car, and also if one is paying for a ticket, and does not have the right amount, is forced to pay extra, but do not get their correct change, I said that is legalised
theft. so please do not answer that I should have had the correct change,
unless you are Mr perfect.

Worcesterman, I was not referring to your comment, if I was I would have quoted you.
I am just fed up with the general attitude that car owners should be able to do what they want, when they want, without thought for others and at no cost to themselves.
Of course you were spot on with me being Mr perfect. :)

Worcester car parks used to give you the amount of time that you paid for. So if the fee was £2.50 and you had to put in £3 at least you got all the time that you had paid for.
But some clever person decided to stop this some time age. The excuse being that to retain it would increase the cost of reprogramming the meters when the prices were changed. I find this very difficult to believe as the meters were already programmed to make the calculation. All that needed to change was the hourly rate charged, i.e. one variable in the programming, not a complete new program.
