Odds were always stacked against rickety pub roofing

SIR – What an interesting article on Mike Grundy’s archives about 1960 and the White Hart public house in College Street.

In those days I worked for a removal firm whose depot was at Diglis.

Parking up of an evening we used Friar Street, which used to join College Street. You could look across and see that chimney stack which was supposed to be adjoining the much larger building next door.

This was Columbus House, Frederick Winwood’s furniture depository.

The chimney stack at that time was well above this building and was leaning away from it.

Every time I used that junction I would comment to my mate about it. You could see about six to nine inches of daylight between the brickwork.

It was in that condition for about one-and-a-half to two years. On the top were two attractive, round chimney pots, one red, one yellow.

Some of my colleagues at that time used to say: “Every time we come here you say the same thing – ‘One of these days that chimney will go straight through that pub’s roof’.” How right I was!

I was thinking Cromwell,if that poor girl, had walked passed five minutes before, she would be as old as us, and raised up a family, she did not deserve to die did she, make you think sometimes dont it.

What a question Worcesterman .Yes Iv had very good friends at one time or the other .People who would be at your side when the going got tough, in all weathers.Buy you a pint when you had no money,Tell a girl a porky to get you of the hook. Some like in the mob when you felt a bit scared and frighten on a cold dark night when thought you were on your own .You'd hear "Hello mate got a light " then take your last but one fag.As they say all have now had the call from the grim reaper. Some times you come across one or see one on the odd occasion Yes Worcesterman Iv had good friends some long gone now. Why?

cromwell ..I was just wondering, thats all, I think its the way you write your comments, sometimes very abrasive, I agree with a lot of things you say, but sometimes the way you say it, it could be that you are p-----d off, with all politicians, am i wrong?.

Worcesterman believe it or not I am by nature a very mile manned bloke. That is until a body .Takes me for granted ,. Abuses my trust . Or lies while smiling at me.Would you trust 99% of politicians who at the present moment govern us .Certainly not me. Then there are the person or persons .Who for some reason or the other try and prove to you that 2 plus 2 is 5. Over these many years depending on the person ,Time and place I would walk away saying not one word. But then there's that person who you have seen operating time and time again , who stands well back after stirring up things .and to me their credit rating is below zero.Who then comes forward and displays him self as if he is far more knowledgeable ,supiera in his understand of events, and talks at you as if you are small child like person and in lecturing you tries to convey to you you have not penetrated beyond your front door . But lives in the believe that only he knows what is good for all and in doing so forgets his faults. I have come against both in the Trade Union Movement and Private business the term use to describe them is wreckers Just look at the motor industry, Ship building, Steel, coal mining. the present dispute etc, And these people Worcesterman are the ones I am abusive, and personal with not people who may disagree with me over normal debate.

Cromwell
I have to agree, with many of your points,as you are right, this Country does not make anything these days, we started the industrial revolution. and now nothing.
If only Peter, would make a statement,
saying that he will get the schools back to teaching basics of woodwork, metalwork, etc, instead of the rubbish, that he comes out with, then he would be worth voting for. but not Progressive thoughts, which to me, means communist indoctrination.
