Council job losses are a total scandal

SIR – The loss of 500 jobs at the county council is an absolute scandal.

Why should service users and workers pay for a crisis not of our making? Even if these jobs are lost through natural wastage and voluntary redundancy it will mean some services will be cut to the bone.

Where will the youths who will not get into university this year because of government cuts find a job? Not at the council. This generation is fast becoming a lost generation.

Why is Adrian Gregson, the local leader UNISON, not saying the same thing as service users and the workers he is meant to represent, that we can’t afford service cuts and redundancies?

Is it because he’s been thinking too hard about the above-inflation increase to his city councillor’s allowance he voted himself recently?

Doesn’t he have a conflict of interest as a member of the party of government forcing these cuts on us as well as being the local leader of the union meant to defend workers from attack?

Birmingham city council unions organised a mass protest within a week of the announcement of savage job cuts. Where is the lead from our trade union’s representatives?
