SIR – The BBC’s widely-announced cut-backs appear to have already started.
Although not quite my era, I feel comfortable in Candleford, but the episode with the visiting dressmaker had me cringing. Does anyone check the props or period pieces? Within the opening 15 minutes there were countless errors, such as modern bales of straw, a modern wooden bench in the street, a zip on Dorcas’s dress, wooden chip and soil artificial roads, all neatly laid across farmland and a gas fire burning in a fire grate. How blind do they think we are?
The biggest error was the invoice presented to Miss Pratt, which was shown as “£221/84” – in decimal currency!
If they are paying young and inexperienced staff to produce (and ruin) these period plays, what rubbish can we expect after the cuts?
