Police do what people want – catch fast cars

SIR – I was interested to read Gary Johnson’s letter and Worcester News’ choice of headline (Letters, Tuesday, March 9).

I realise there is a perception on the part of some motorists that the police in some way “target” them. However, the fact is that at every public meeting I attend and at most PACT (police and communities together) meetings and events across this division, members of the public repeatedly tell us that the biggest concern in their local community is speeding traffic.

We have a proud history in this country of policing by consent. It is very important that our priorities reflect those of local people and are seen to do so, while also recognising that we still have to fulfil many other commitments.

Clearly, not all motorists are as law abiding as Mr Johnson. I hardly think the officer was “trying to catch innocent people”. She was trying to catch drivers exceeding the speed limit and therefore breaking the law, which is exactly what local people tell us they want us to do. Anyone keeping to the speed limit, like Mr Johnson, has nothing to worry about.

Speed kills. The motorist speeding cannot expect to be allowed to judge for theirselves if it is safe to go above the speed limit so enforcement is necessary. Fixed cameras do not work. Drivers quickly know where fixed cameras are and slow as they pass, quickly speeding again. As said in the letter - drivers have nothing to fear from roadside checks unless they break the law.

Speeding is a serious issue and I'd like to see police checking the speeding in my area (Nunnery Wood). It's a 20 mph area, being near schools, but I frequently see people going well over 30 mph.
As a father with young children, having a safe environment to walk to school, etc. is very important.
If only the speeding drivers considered this.
The irony is that some of the worst offenders have young children in their cars.

I agree with Matthew Jenkins - I witness quite a bit of speeding around schools - 20 mph doesn't seem to apply to some! The Police do do some checks but of course if motorists see a person in a bright jacket with a speed gun they slow down.

Can NOT understand why it is necessary to site notices warning motorist of speed camaras ahead. Firmly enforceing speed limits will make motorist more concious of their speed at all times and not just as they approach a camera.
