Book of condolence should be in Guildhall for all to see

SIR – Ten out of 10 to Councillor Alan Amos for proposing the idea of a memorial and book of condolence for all those killed in conflicts since 1945.

However, I give naught out of 10 for the suggested location – County Hall, where the majority of Worcestershire residents will never see it. In the 40-plus years I have lived in Worcester I have only been there once.

There is only one place for this memorial and book of condolence and that is alongside the names of all those that gave their lives in First and Second World Wars – and that is the Guildhall. I believe that there are a significant number of Worcestershire people who are unaware that behind wooden shutters in the Guildhall are embossed the names of all those who gave their lives for this country. These names are kept covered, I only assume to protect them. Perhaps these shutters could be opened when there are events on in the Guildhall?

Alan Amos remains strangely quiet on his reasons for wanting this memorial at County Hall. He should be reminded that it is THEIR memorial, not HIS.

Agreed it should be placed in the guildhall, where people that wish to can view it. You are correct, behind the wooden panels are those names, and that’s not the only secret the guildhall hides, along with others it has some wonderful cells below its floor for holding vagabonds of the time, the guild hall is a underused asset and should be a focal point in Worcester.
