This just confirmed all our suspicions

SIR – The recent revelations about Lord Ashcroft’s tax status confirm what many of us have suspected for the past 10 years – that the undertakings he gave to be domiciled in the UK and pay full UK tax, which he claims to have re-negotiated privately, were not worth the paper they were written on.

The vice-chairman of the Conservative Party has been less than candid with his own party and the British people, preferring to play cat and mouse over his tax status and betraying the trust of his own party leaders – but not before ploughing £5 million donations into marginal seats. No wonder Cameron or Hague were not too keen to shine a light into a dark corner and press Ashcroft on his tax status.

I trust the British electorate will show the Conservatives that these seats, which have not been for sale since the days of rotten boroughs, are still not for sale.

Why does it always seem to come down to cash?

Talk about "money is the root of all evil" - never was a truer word spoken!

Actually CS, the quote is that 'the love of money is the root of all evil', but I wouldn't expect a Lib Dem to let the truth get in the way of their argument.

I'm afraid I can't see the issue here - Lord Ashcroft paid tax in Belize on the money he earned in Belize, and tax in UK on the money he earned in UK.

As for putting seats for sale, perhaps Mr Burt could encourage his fellow Dudley councillors to stand in Worcester as there are apparently no Lib Dems in Worcester up to the job.

I'd be far more concerned about the taxpayers money that the labour party has been laundering through the unions to fund the labour party. If you want to go on a witch hunt Mr Burt try that for size rather than trying to smear someone who was correctly paying his taxes in two countrys.
