We shouldn't be so shocked at killings

SIR – The recall to prison of John Venables has reawakened a baying lynch mob mentality, which is strangely absent about the vast majority of adults who murder children. In those cases few of us can remember more than one or two names and are indifferent to what becomes of them.

So why the hatred towards disturbed children who kill? I suggest that we should be surprised that children do not kill more often. A glance at our television schedules reveals a society that craves violence as entertainment so we can expect some young minds to get the wrong idea and do bad things.

Does he not realise that this "hatred" is aimed at Venables (and Thompson) because they have been released and set loose in society.
At the end of the day you cannot change the facts about what happened eighteen years ago.
Two "children" aged ten took a little two year old boy from a shopping centre. They took hold of his tiny hand and walked him out of the shopping centre to an area where the tortured and killed him. This poor little mite went with them and even, in his own little way, probably trusted them. Evidently he squealed and cried for his mother whilst he was being tortured.
Venables and Thompson may only have been ten years old at the time but surely the seriousness of what they did should have meant that they were locked up for the rest of their natural life. Never mind about their "rights". The poor little victim lost his rights at the age of two.
It just goes to show how stupid the people are who believe that the likes of Venables can be rehabilitated.
I think, Mr Stewart, that the word "hatred" in this context is fully justified. Just remember if Venables (and Thompson) had never been released then this situation would never have arisen. Anyway it's just a matter of time until Venables' cover is blown and all details will be available on the internet - then we'll see what happens.
