We shouldn't be so shocked at killings

SIR – The recall to prison of John Venables has reawakened a baying lynch mob mentality, which is strangely absent about the vast majority of adults who murder children. In those cases few of us can remember more than one or two names and are indifferent to what becomes of them.

So why the hatred towards disturbed children who kill? I suggest that we should be surprised that children do not kill more often. A glance at our television schedules reveals a society that craves violence as entertainment so we can expect some young minds to get the wrong idea and do bad things.
