Who is biggest pest animal or human?

SIR – Thank you Jon Burgess for responding to my letter. Firstly, I would just like to ask how can I be stuck in the Edwardian era when all I want to do is move forward with the lost tradition know as fox hunting? Hunting has gone on for centuries – as far back as ancient Egypt, where venery involved using scent-hounds to track prey.

The origins of UK hunting date back to the 16th century where royalty introduced a greater fox population for recreation. Only royals were allowed to hunt. If this isn’t stuck in a time warp, then I stand corrected.

Secondly, the Hunting Bill received royal assent on November 18, 2004. The final pass was on February 18, 2005, but is known as the Hunting Act 2004.

Lastly, I am not being prejudiced, I am merely stating fact. I am aware that there is a mixed class system within a modern hunt but the very core of hunting was from the upper class. It was they who made the fox population a problem. I conclude with one question: Who is the biggest pest – animal or human?

Luke Gregg, I don't really understand your point here, are you saying that Hunting is in a time warp or that only Royals hunt, of course you can go back in time and find many things that royalty did but the average person was not allowed to do, so I think your comments are somewhat pointless, incidently the act was forced through Parliment by what many belive to be the incorrect use of the Parliment act, it is also an ill thought law and has only increased cruelty in the country side.

nebhunting, if you read the previous letters from jon burgess then you would realise that my letter does have a point. You’ve joined half way through an argument so you can’t really say anything can you?

The royalty thing was mentioned to prove how they started off the pompous way in which a hunt is about today. If you want to kill an animal not for meat but because you class it as a pest, then ‘one-on-one’ seems much more fair. Why ponce around in scarlet jackets on horse back with a pack of hounds? Besides, there’s no argument anymore because its illegal. I don’t know why people like you keep getting upset about it. You can still drag or trail hunt without harming anything. If it’s just about the sport then that should suffice. If it’s not then its all about the blood-****…

You say "The origins of UK hunting date back to the 16th century where royalty introduced a greater fox population for recreation. Only royals were allowed to hunt. If this isn’t stuck in a time warp, then I stand corrected."
How can the origins of something mean that it is stuck in a time warp?
You also state that "I am aware that there is a mixed class system within a modern hunt but the very core of hunting was from the upper class." Which once again shows that things have moved on from days gone by.
Your letter does seem to show that you are stuck in a bygone era. This may not be your intention but that is how it reads.

New kid, I agree with what you are saying. I realise that my letter sounded as if i'm stuck in a time warp. Like you said, its how it's read. What I was trying to get at was how could Jon Burgess say that I was stuck in the Edwardian era when the hunt community keep on moaning how their traditions have been abolished by the hunting act. The reason why i mentioned bygone days was to state that the hunters were stuck there theirselves.
