SIR - N M Dunkley (Worcester News, June 17) refers to people's pride in being British and desire to fly "the flag of St George". However, this correspondent should be aware that the appropriate flag to fly to express "British" pride is the Union Flag. St David, St Patrick and St Andrew really existed and became Christian martyrs of the early Church. On the other hand St George is probably a myth. His main claim to fame was supposed to be his slaying of a fire-breathing dragon. Of course such creatures as dragons are also mythical. The concept of a dragon may be based on the natural crocodile, a creature which itself seems to be a throw-back to the Age of Dinosaurs.

The "flag of St George" has become largely a football flag. No harm in that, of course, but such flag does not compare, in any way, to the majesty of the Union Flag.
