SIR -- Charity Shops are supposed to be an escape from the mainstream. An Aladdin's cave of intriguing bargains. It comes to something when older members of the community cannot browse in the city's charity shops to spend a few bob helping others without falling prey to thieves. It appears to be the latest in a catalogue of thefts affecting the retail operation of the charitable sector. Without dedicated security which they simply cannot afford these locations are likely to continue to be targeted as easy pickings and so vigilance is essential. It is a morale crusher for the volunteers and hits the pockets of the charities. If people get the idea charity shops are not safe places, many will give them a wide berth. Perhaps it is time for a concerted drive by the Police to catch some of these scoundrels.
