You eat my grass – I’ll have a pork chop

SIR – I have to reply to the: “We want you all to eat grass and GM-modified spuds brigade”.

However, the animal kingdoms they say they represent are actually a most cruel species.

Just this week I watched a documentary on the suburban fox. These animals they want to protect are among the most indiscriminate killers, taking anything they can – chickens five at a time but only partially eating one. Cats are no match for them as are many other domesticated pets.

In the wild is it OK for packs of wolves to hunt, or a pride of lions to bring down a defenceless zebra, antelope, or even take on elephants? No swift death there.

As to cattle being transported miles for slaughter, this came from the animal rights campaigners who without thinking had hundreds of local abattoirs closed.

And where are these protesters when they were challenged to demonstrate against halal slaughter.

So, come freely to graze my grass while I enjoy my steak or pork chop.

Yes, Brian - the world is strangely silent when it comes to condemming Halal practices!

I have heard nothing at all from either the Animal Protection League and all the followers of animal cruelty, or the RSPCA - why?

I would ban it in this country - purely on the grounds of "it's not our way".

They were doing it that way, in the day of our Lord - and that was 2,000 years ago! We have now found more humane ways to kill our food?

CS:
You should know by now, that you cannot comment on the rights, of our
indigenous people, and yes, that includes the RSPCA.
.
If someone informs them you are mistreating a fly, an army of them will decend upon you, from a great height.
.
But will act the three monkeys, when it come to Halal perpetrators.
.
Only the sane, can see what the Progressives are doing to this once great Country.
.
I bet you are pleased that you are in your latter years, like myself.

I am, Sir - I am!

We have seen the best of this nation - for what it was worth. I dread to think what the next 70 years holds!

I commented on this ages ago - a humane way to conduct halal slaughter has been developed that involves stunning the animal in such a way that it will wake up unharmed if it isn't slaughtered. This was agreed to be acceptable by influential muslim leaders and as far as I know, has been adopted - thereby complying with both UK law and muslim religious practices.
.
I don't have any figures for the uptake of this process, but as any abbatoir that didn't would be breaking the law, I assume it has been adopted across the board. The 'cruel halal slaughter' gets trotted out regularly and as far as I can see is just part of the xenophobic/bigoted anti-muslim agenda.

Marant:
Did I read you correctly?
You say, that if it is stunned a certain
way, that if not slaughtered, it will wake up, I dont get it!, why stun it, if you are not going to slaughter it?.
.
Are you taking the "P" out of us?
you say you don't have figures, and you "assume".
.
How about giving us true figures, and dont assume, then and only then will I believe you.
.
Then out it comes, its your agenda, saying, we are xenophobic/bigoted,
anti-muslim, anti-everything.

Worcesterman,
The reason Halal slaughtering did not stun the animals first was down to religious codes saying that the animal had to be alive when its blood was drained (note for the pedants - I'm not an Islamic scholar), traditional British slaughtering practices use a stunner that kills the animal, so this was not seen as acceptable.
.The type of stunner that was developed and I was talking about renders the animal unconcious, so it doesn't suffer during slaughtering, but it would come around if it was left to recuperate, and therefore wasn't "dead". This was deemed to comply with Halal practices. The animals wouldn't usually be stunned and not slaughtered, as I'm sure you would have realised if you weren't so quick to start stirring.
.
I don't have figures because I have better things to do at the minute. If I get a chance on my lunch break I might have a look and see. It was a very interesting programme I watched. Panaorama I think, or something similar.

What a dumb letter. Why are foxes deemed to be cruel because they kill a hen house full of chickens or a lion killing a zebra? That is how they hunt, foxes kill all the hens so they are guaranteed , at least in the foxes head, some food later when he returns....
No matter what meat eaters say, there is no reason to eat meat, we can and do function perfectly well without it, there are plenty of vegan athletes, some at the top of their sports, even Lance Armstrong has recommended a vegan health book, a Texan no less! .
If you must eat meat make sure it is as ethical as possible if you care about animal welfare. How far you go is up to your conscience.
