Vesta Tilley was a remarkable star

SIR – I read with interest James Savage’s article about the campaign to name a new footbridge in Worcester after Vesta Tilley (August 25). As a member of the de Frece family I am in full support of this proposal. My great-grandfather Isaac de Frece was a brother of Henry de Frece, whose son Walter de Frece, was Vesta Tilley’s husband and manager. Mr Savage’s account of Vesta Tilley’s fame is very accurate and was the subject of the 1957 motion picture, After the Ball, starring Pat Kirkwood and Laurence Harvey. I have done a considerable amount of reading about Vesta Tilley’s career and, as the article notes, she was very famous in her time and certainly deserves the recognition of having the new bridge in Worcester named after her.

I have no doubt that, if this is achieved, there will be a sign at each end of the bridge that details her many accomplishments. At that point, the citizens of Worcester who use the bridge will come know of this remarkable star of music hall shows on both sides of the Atlantic.

I am in agreement with my Canadian cousin Robert de Frece that the new foot bridge should be named after her. However, I still think that the "SWAN THEATRE" in Worcester should ALSO be re-named the "VESTA TILLEY THEATRE" (as suggested by my other British cousin Group Captain RAF (Retd.) Ken Wood) and at a later date, once the prevailing National economy has improved, that a bronze statue/or bust of Vesta Tilley should be erected either in the foyer of the Theatre itself, or in a Worcester square. This would be most becoming for Worcester and its Citizens, as well as a lasting tribute to THEIR VERY OWN famous and legendary Music Hall Artiste.
