Pull the plug on useless EU

SIR – Having regard to the palatial office block being prepared for Baroness Ashton and her 1,000-plus staff in Brussels, it begs the question, what for?

We have a government attempting to fill the hole in our finance by cutting millions of pounds and pouring billions of pounds into the power-mad useless organisation known as a European Union. Can anyone give me any valid reason why we don’t pull the plug on this lot?

EW Taylor:
You are asking a lot of important questions, but unfortunately to the wrong people.
This Country of lemmimgs, by joining the E.U. has doomed itself to destruction.
I thought that they would wake up, and find out that the E.U. is another name for Communist State, as that is what it is.
The E.U. is now entrenched, with its claws into every Country stupid enough to join it.
If you think we could pull out, i'm sorry we are now so firmly in it, it will never happen.
When the stupid voters finaly wake up,
they will be slaves to the Huge juggernaut that they helped to build.
Mr Taylor, the stupidity of people never cease to amaze me.

Totally agree, Worcesterman - we all know it....it's only the politicians who simply don't see it!

Even when we change them for a fresh lot, it all goes on in exactly the same way.

However, that said, if people REALLY wanted to leave the EU, surely we would have voted in UKIP or the BNP - both of whom would take us out?

Both those parties did very poorly in the elections - this, to me, sadly shows that people seem happy with the way things are going.

I personally, think we will all bitterly regret not remaining an independant nation.

If the politicains know something we don't, why don't they tell us what it is - there is no more openness in government, only lies and deceipt - right from Edward Heath, through to today!

Thank you Common Sense, as always you are the small number who agree with me.
I think a lot of it stems from the Leftwing teachers, that seem to prolific itself in our schools.
You only have to see that all jobs that feed the tentacles of power, are only advertised in the Leftwing Guardian Newspaper.
.
You are right in what you say, about the BNP and UKIP, but they do not have the backing of the many Newspapers, but denigrate them.
And people as always believe what is said about them, and consequently fail to put them in power.
If the BNP were filled with Saints, they still would not get in.
CS, someways I am glad to see it happen, it will teach all the idiots that lack brainpower one big lesson.
When it happens, they will not be able to get rid of what they blindly made happen.

Here something to chew over. The Institute of Fiscal Studies and the London School of Economics.Have both stated that if this Nation was to with drew from the cesspit of the EU it would take between two and a half to three years to return this Nation back to complete financial solvency. Cuts what cuts

All this name calling tells me that all of you above have no arguments and belong to the deluded minority that thinks that you are right and the rest of the world is wrong. I support the EU for a string of reasons that have improved this country and I will debate it with anybody any time. However, the language being used by the above suggests that I would be wasting my time on them. Let's have a referendum on our membership. I have no doubt that our membership would be supported by a majority.

Many of you appear to be living in the past, harking back to a time when Britain was the great superpower in the world, when nation states were sovereign and often at war, both politically (WWI and II) and economically (such as through trade barriers). The world is quite different now and many decisions need to be taken at a European level and globally. Surely it's better to have this done in a democratic way through the EU (however imperfect), rather than by private discussions between leaders of nations. Just because you don't see the benefits of EU membership, it doesn't mean there aren't any; it just means you're not looking for them.

Hi Matthew, First may I enlighten you about the EU and what you call democracy. The EU do not do democracy tell me when you voted for Mr Van Romploy,as president, when did you vote for Baroness Cathy Ashton, when did we vote for the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, do you want me to go on.Europe will not be made all at once, but a step at a time. The political elite know what they are doing, the rest of us are irrelevant. So Matthew do you think it is correct for this country to have all its dicisions made for us by a foriegn power. Do you think its correct for the EU to tell us we must open our borders to every Tom, Dick, and Harry.Do you think it was right For the EU to tell the Royal Mail it must lose it subsidies and close post office's.I sugest you read the following, Britain Held Hostage by Lindsay Jenkins,The Last Days of Britain by Lindsay Jenkins, England our England by Vernon Coleman, Shadow Masters by Daniel Estulin,These people in power who I have mentioned do not in any way represent your intrests. This was made sure through the signing of the Treaty of Amsterdam in October 1997, which removed the border controls between EU states. The next step for the EU was the dismantling of independent nations that comes in the form of the Nice Treaty. And just for the record all who I have mentiond have attended Bilderberge meetings in the past, but that is another story. So Matthew no the EU will not do DEMOCRACY wake up and smell the coffee.

Network, currently 75% of EU laws come from the European Parliament, whom we do elect and this percentage is likely to increase. Of course, UKIP are known for twisting the facts, for instance by quoting this 75% figure (from a speech by the then President of the European Parliament) and claiming that it meant that 75% of our laws come from Europe. Was that a deliberate lie by UKIP or just a silly mistake? As to opening the borders within the EU, don't forget that people from EU countries can live in the UK for up to three months. After that, they can only stay here if they are working, registered students or self-supporting. And why not see this as a positive thing, that you can freely travel and work in another EU country? Euro-sceptics hunt around for negative stories, which are usually false (e.g. "EU to ban selling eggs by the dozen" as reported by The Daily Mail), rather than considering the many benefits.

The latest whiz I hear from that lot that Govern us in the EU is, if its to be Believed, is wait for it .Ready .To ban Vacuum Cleaners. Some thing or other to do with the environment. I must admit I not 100% sure on this one. My guess is they suck up all of our oxygen and make it very messy for people to breath.

You once accused me of being Richard Burt. Then you accused me of being a member of a political party, which I am not. You now suggest that I have a "God". I am an atheist very much in the Dawkins camp.

PeterNielsen;
Untill you tell me, I can only assume.
I tell you what, you say we want to stay in the EU. Let me ask you a question, why is it that the Governments of all persuasion, will not give us that vote?
Because they are frightened to do so.
They will never ever give us that vote.

PeterNielsen says...

Worcesterman, You are right. All the centrist politicians of the Tory and Labour parties are afraid of facing the consequences of a vote to withdraw from the EU. I do support the EU and see it as a growing force for good in the world if progressive European political parties and trade unions would pull together and work for a more equal world. We disagree about progressive politics, and about our membership of the EU. We do agree that there should be a vote at some stage to affirm or reject our membership. I believe that such a vote would confirm our membership. You probably do not. I think the fact that the anti-EU campaigners have had a free run (because the pros have kept quiet) has given the impression that more people are anti-EU than is actually the case. In the heat of a referendum campaign, attitudes would be exposed to arguments and give a true picture. I believe (but could be wrong) that Britain would vote "Yes" to remaining in the EU.
Unfortunately, as you say, the it is unlikely to happen unless a party is elected with an unequivocal commitment to hold a referendum.
