SIR – Finally the US is withdrawing from Iraq. The country is left in an economic and social mess while the cost in lives is truly staggering.
The death tally stands at US troops 4,421, UK troops 179 and the latest estimate for the number of Iraqi dead is more than 600,000. The financial costs are more than $800 billion for the US and £9.2 billion for the UK.
This war was advanced by the US and supported by both the Labour government and Conservative party despite the majority of the British people being opposed to the it. We need to learn from these mistakes. Why don’t we create thousands of new jobs investing in the infrastructure of a low carbon economy instead of continuing to spend billions on the war in Afghanistan and the planned replacement of Trident nuclear missiles?
